MPLAB IDE
MPLAB ICE 2000 USB Converter Device Driver
First Time Installation

For Windows 98

When MPLAB ICE 2000 is plugged into the USB for the first time and powered, the following steps MUST be taken in order to properly install the device drivers.

Before You Begin

You must have purchased the Microchip MPLAB ICE 2000 USB Converter (ACICE0108) to use USB with the MPLAB ICE 2000 emulator.  (There is no built-in USB capability on the emulator.) The converter is not a standard USB-to-parallel converter, but one specifically designed for the emulator.

If you have already chosen a Windows driver instead of the Microchip driver for this device, you will have to preform a "clean" using the utility  MPUsbClean.exe found in the Utilities folder of the MPLAB IDE installation directory. Follow the instructions in this utlity and then return here to install the correct drivers.
STEP 1

Connect one end of the USB cable to the converter and the other end to the PC. Do not connect the converter to the MPLAB ICE 2000 at this time.

If you are using an external USB HUB, make sure it has a power supply and is powered or this procedure will not work.

STEP 2

The first time a new USB device is plugged into a Windows 98 system, a small dialog box will appear indicating that the system has found a new hardware device. There may also be a dialog box that informs the user that a device data base is being built or updated.

After these dialogs appear, the Add New Hardware Wizard dialog box (shown at the right) is displayed. Click "Next" to continue the installation.

STEP 3

Make sure that "Search for the best driver..." is selected and click "Next".
STEP 4

This next dialog box allows the user to specify where needed files for the new device are to be found. Make sure all the check boxes are unchecked except for the one that says "Specify a location". Select "Specify a location" and then enter the path to the device driver files (either type the path in or use the "Browse" button to search). Under a normal installation, this path should be:

C:\Program Files\Microchip\MPLAB IDE\ICE 2000\Drivers\USB

Once the path is specified, click "Next".

STEP 5

This next dialog box should indicate that the "Microchip MPLAB ICE 2000 USB Converter" has been found and show the path that was previously selected. Click "Next".
STEP 5a

The wizard may fail to find or recognize the INF file. You will be warned if this happens.

In the Copying Files dialog, enter or browse to:

C:\Program Files\Microchip\MPLAB IDE\ICE 2000\Drivers\USB

Once this directory is selected, click "OK" and continue with the install.

STEP 6

This dialog box will indicate that the "Microchip MPLAB ICE 2000 USB Converter" has been installed. To complete this process, click "Finish".
STEP 7

To verify that the proper device driver has been loaded, use Start>Control Panel>System>Device Manager. The MPLAB ICE 2000 should appear under "Micrchip Tools" as "Microchip MPLAB ICE 2000 USB Converter".
STEP 8

Complete the installation by referring to the
"MPLAB ICE 2000 Installation Instructions" (DS51489), "MPLAB ICE 2000 In-Circuit Emulator User's Guide" (DS51488) or MPLAB ICE 2000 on-line help file.

Note:
If you have previously been using the emulator with parallel communications, be sure to change to USB.
